Club Information

Waverley Basketball Club's primary aim is to provide opportunities for young people, boys and girls, to play and enjoy basketball. The Club is committed to promoting basketball, sportsmanship and team play among children - from beginners through to experienced players. The Club, which was formed in 1974, is part of the Melbourne East Basketball Association (MEBA) and has junior teams from Under 8's through to Under 23's. We play in the Saturday boys, girls and mixed competition, Monday night girls competition, Monday night mixed Under 8 and 10's competition and Friday Night Boys competition.

Committee Waverley Basketball Club is a run entirely by a Committee of volunteers. The Committee meets once a month and new members are always welcome. For a full list of roles, please email our Club Administrator at clubadministrator@waverleybasketballclub.net

Registrations Online registration’s through PlayHQ open toward the end of each season for the upcoming/next season. Registration fees are paid at the time of registration. We hold a Club Photo and Uniform Order Day to coincide with the online registration process. For all registration enquiries, please contact our Registrar at registrar@waverleybasketball.net and for all uniform enquiries, please email our Uniform Coordinator at uniforms@waverleybasketball.net

Playing Ages The age group for the Summer season is determined by the player's age as at the 30th of June in the year the season starts. For example a player who turned 10 on the 1st of July can still play Under 10's for the Summer season starting later that year (beginning Term 4). The age groups for the Winter season (beginning Term 2) are determined by the player's age as at the 31st of December of the year before.

Team Selections Team Selections for all age groups are carried out in accordance with the Team Selection Policy, by our Age Group Team Selectors and our Selection Committee. This ensures that players of similar skill and ability levels will play together and give players the opportunity to develop while being competitive in their grade. The skill level, size of players and the position that they will play (centre, forward or guard) as well as player friend requests (within reason) are all considered. Selectors personally observe current players and get input from our Coaches. Current and new players may be requested to attend a selection or training clinic. Team lists are made available at Presentation Day or can be requested after they are published by emailing our Selection Coordinator at teams@waverleybasketball.net

Training Saturday teams train primarily at Jells Park Primary School on weeknights (excluding Fridays) in one hour blocks between 4.30pm and 9.30pm and Brandon Park Primary School and Mulgrave Primary School on Mondays and Tuesdays between 6 and 9pm. The venue, day and time of training is allocated according to age groups, similar age groups training together and Coaches requirements. We are unable to fulfill individual player training requests. Midweek teams do not have a scheduled training session.

Game Venues Competitions are played at numerous venues including Nunawading Stadium, The Rings, Forest Hill Secondary College, Wheelers Hill Secondary College and several others (see www.nunawadingbasketball.com.au for a list of all venues). Entry is free!

Expectations In the interests of good sportsmanship and the reputation of junior basketball and the Club itself, Waverley Basketball Club has adopted various codes of conduct for Coaches, players and spectators. These can all be found on this website.

Coaches Each team must have a Coach who is appointed by the Club. The Coach will contact all team members before the start of the season. The Club relies on volunteers – with or without experience. If you are interested in Coaching, please contact our Coaching Coordinator by emailing coaches@waverleybasketball.net  All Coaches must hold a current and valid Working with Children card. You will be asked to provide a copy of your WWC card to our Working With Children Coordinator at wwc@waverleybasketball.net

Team Managers A Team Manager is required for each team and any parent can volunteer, with the exception of the Coach. The Team Manager is an essential link between the Coach and the players and assists the Coach during the season in a variety of ways. Team Manager duties range from organising a scoring roster to distributing information to team players. If you are willing to take on this role please mark this on your registration form or notify the Club or your Coach as soon as possible. The Club will provide full details and any assistance you require. If we don’t get volunteers, parents will be approached and requests from the Committee will be made as this is such a critical role. All Team Managers must hold a current and valid Working with Children card.

Scoring All parents are expected to be part of their child's team scoring roster. If you have not scored before, ask an experienced person on your team to sit with and assist you or ask the Team Manager for help. MEBA runs score bench courses at the Nunawading Stadium during the season. If you are interested in this course please contact a Committee member or check the MEBA website.

Team Sheet fees Each week there is a charge by the playing venue per team per game. This payment effectively pays for the venue and referees. This fee is included in your registration payment.

Game Day All team members are encouraged to arrive at the playing venue at least 15 minutes prior to the game start. This allows players and Coaches to warm up and prepare for the game. If a player is unable to play or attend training they are required to notify the Coach or Team Manager as soon as possible and no later than 24 hrs before prior to allow adequate time for substitute players to be organised for the team. A walkover fee is levied against the Club if less than 4 players from a team are present. All parents and other supporters are welcome and are warmly encouraged to come and watch the games.

Team photos Team photos are taken toward the end of the season. The cost of a team photo is usually included in the registration fee. A sibling or other photo is an extra cost. Even if you do not wish to receive a team photo, we ask all players to attend. All photo times are listed on our website, Facebook and your Team Manager will also notify you. Any queries, please contact our Photo Coordinator at photos@waverleybasketball.net

Presentation Day At the end of each season the Club hosts a Club Presentation Day. Team lists for the next season including players’ names, Coach and training details are revealed at the conclusion of the event. Waverley Basketball Club encourages all players to attend Club Presentation Day as it is a time to celebrate and recognise the achievements of our teams and players for the season.
